Locklear powers Women's Basketball past Mars HillSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College senior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the host Lady Indians defeated Mars Hill 103-84 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba, which reached the century mark in scoring for the first time this season, improves to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the SAC. Mars Hill falls to 13-9 and 6-4. Catawba shot just 36% in the opening half, but used a 28-16 rebounding edge, including a 15-3 advantage on the offensive glass, to take a 44-36 lead to the break. Locklear had 19 of her points and nine rebounds by the half. Leading 28-27 with 5:35 to go in the half, Catawba used an 11-2 run to grab a 39-29 advantage with 2:08 remaining. The Lady Indians would scorch the nets in the final half, hitting on 73% (19-of-26) from the floor. Catawba bolted to a 15-point lead after five minutes and built a 75-55 edge with 10:06 to go. The largest lead was 103-82 just before the final horn. Catawba finished the game with a 49-30 edge in rebounding and shot 50.7% for the game. Locklear posted her game-high scoring total by hitting on 11-of-18 field goals and was a perfect 11-for-11 at the line. Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) tallied 17 of her 19 points after the break. Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) had 17 point and eight assists, while Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) added a dozen points. Mars Hill was led by Lindsey Jones (Crossville, TN), who tallied 22 points. Laura Snider (Old Fort, NC) scored 14 points off the bench, hitting on 4-of-5 from three-point range. Tiffany Atkins (Barnardsville, NC) totaled 11 points and seven rebounds, while Lindsay Roberts (Murphy, NC) and Kristi Ferris (Knoxville, TN) each had 10 points. #####
