Records fall as Swimming places fifth at BGMC Meet

WOOSTER, OH Catawba College finished fifth out of a dozen teams at the Blue Grass Mountain Conference Swim Meet over the weekend at the Shapiro Natatorium in Wooster, OH. The Lady Indians finished with a total of 329 points. Wingate won the event with a total of 679 points. The Lady Indians swan to numerous school records and career best times at the meet. Erin Hyde (Lilburn, GA) set a new standard in the 100 back on Thursday. Her leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay was in a time of 1:01.46, breaking her record set last year. Her leg helped the relay team, which placed fourth, to a new school mark with a time of 4:09.06, five seconds better than the previous record. Also on Thursday, the 200 free relay team finished sixth, while freshman Lauren Smith (Seekonk, MA) swam a lifetime best 2:17.39 in the 200 IM and was eighth. Beth Gill (Woodbury, NJ) had a ninth place finish in the 50 free with freshman Jaimee Park (Norcross, GA) placing 12th. Friday saw the most records fall for the Lady Indians. Hyde, who swam to three individual records, would post another in the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay as her 50 backstroke time was 29.56. She helped the team to a sixth place finish in a record time of 1:57.91, breaking the record held since 1997 of 1:58.62. Freshman Margeaux Doiron (Gibson, LA) posted a record in the 100 fly, finished sixth in a time of 1:01.31. Freshman Katherine Fair (Valdez, AK), who was ninth, set a 50 fly record in the opening leg during the prelims in 28.68. Gill was tenth in the event. Hyde would finish fourth in the 200 free in a time of 1:58.58 and third in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.74. Smith would set two records in the 100 breaststroke. She was fifth in a time 1:10.46 and also set the 50 breaststroke record with a first leg of 33.31. Fair was eighth in the event with a time of 1:11.40. The final record of the day fell in the 800 free relay with a time of 8:10.22, more than six seconds better the old record. Hyde rallied the team from sixth place after three legs to finish third in the relay. On Saturday, Hyde would set a new record in the 200 back with a swim of 2:11.61 and finished fifth. Smith would add her third individual record of the meet in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a time of 2:32.03 to finish fifth.
