Women's Basketball Rallies From 14 Down in Final Quarter to Top Coker
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba erased a 14-point deficit in a dominating fourth quarter to take a 74-60 victory over host Coker in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at the DeLoach Center on Monday afternoon. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, returning to action for the first time since their opening win on Nov. 21. The Cobras fall to 1-4 and 1-4.
Sara McIntosh scored 10 of her game-high 13 points in the final quarter as Catawba outscored the hosts 36-8. The Lady Indians held the Cobras to two field goals and forced nine turnovers in the final 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Catawba canned 11-of-15 (73.3%), converting those Coker miscues into 15 points.
Catawba had trailed by as many as 21 points early in the third quarter before reducing the margin to 14 by the end of the period. McIntosh and Janiya Downs got the Lady Indians going in the final quarter.
McIntosh had two layups and two free throws to cut the margin to 52-47 and Downs’ layup, her fifth point of the quarter pulled Catawba within three. After two free throws by Talia Barnes, Catawba was down 52-51 with 5:45 remaining.
Coker got a basket and two free throws to go up by five before a six-point run by Catawba gave the Lady Indians their first lead since the opening minutes at 57-56 with four minutes left. After a Coker basket, Tashia DeShazo put Catawba up to stay with a three-pointer and the Lady Indians stretched the lead over the final minutes.
Downs joined McIntosh with 13 points, while Shemya Stanback posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Stanback added five steals and four assists. Downs recorded six steals.
Je’Nya Wilder led Coker with 11 points. Emily Davis, Abigail Keesling and Hope Richardson all had 10. Saquita Joyner pulled down eight rebounds.
Catawba shot just 25% in the first half and made only 23% in the third quarter before exploding in the final 10 minutes. Coker jumped out to a 19-10 lead after a quarter and posted a 39-22 edge at the break. The Cobras had hit almost half their shots in the opening three quarters.
Catawba is set to return to action on Saturday, traveling to Mars Hill for a 2 p.m. tip.
