Men's Basketball Takes Wake Forest To The Wire

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba gave ACC-foe Wake Forest a tough test before falling 70-62 in men’s basketball action on Thursday afternoon at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Demon Deacons improve to 3-0, while the game was an exhibition for the Catawba Indians.
Four Indians reached double figures in the loss. Terrence Whitfield led the way with 16 points, all but two in the second half. Larry McLeod followed with 14 points, while Ben Bowen just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Raqwain Drummond chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
It appeared it might be a long day for Catawba as the Demon Deacons used an 18-0 run to erase an early deficit to lead 21-4 at the 11:21 mark of the half. The Indians would regroup, A bucket by Bowen and a three-point play by Drummond made it 21-9 and Whitfield’s lone bucket of the half pulled Catawba within single digits with 5:53 left.
Bowen connected on a pair of three-pointers in the final six minutes, with the second cutting the margin to 30-28 with 1:23 remaining. Wake took a 32-30 lead to the break.
Whitfield twice tied the contest early in the second half, then again at 40-40 on a four-point play with 15:43 to go. Wake Forest scored the next five points and led the rest of the way. McLeod kept Catawba close, cutting a lead to 51-48 on a jumper with nine minutes left.
The Deacons pushed its lead to 11 with five minutes left before a final run by Catawba. A Whitfield free throw capped a 7-0 run that cut the lead to 62-58 with 2:04 to go. His three-pointer made it 65-61 with 1:16 left, but Wake was solid at the line, canning five-of-six in the final minutes to claim the win.
Daivien Williamson led Wake with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Isaiah Mucius and Carter Whitt each scored 11 with Jahcobi Neath adding 10. The Demon Deacons shot 43% and held Catawba to just 36%. Wake had one more rebound and the Indians one less turnover.
Catawba is scheduled to return to league action next Wednesday, traveling to Queens for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
