Cox's career-high leads Women's Basketball past Wingate

WINGATE, NC – Junior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) poured in a career-high 31 points, while senior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) added her 15th double-double of the season as Catawba College defeated host Wingate 87-76 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. Catawba improves to 16-8 overall and 8-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 16-9 and 8-3. Catawba led virtually the entire contest and began to pull away in the final five minutes of the first half. Cox scored on a three-point play at the 4:29 mark to help spark a 9-2 run that gave the Lady Indians a 41-30 edge with 2:23 left. Catawba would go on to build a 48-32 edge by the break, ending the half on a 16-4 run. Cox scored 19 points in the opening stanza, connecting on 6-of-9 field goals. The Lady Indians would hold a double-digit the lead the entire second half. Wingate got as close as 10 on several occasions early in the final half, but a pair of free throws by Cox gave Catawba a 71-51 lead with 10:57 remaining. Cox finished the night 8-of-12 from the field, including a 4-for-7 effort from behind the arc. She was a perfect 11-of-11 at the line. Locklear would add 21 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for Catawba. She also had four steals and three blocked shots. Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) came off the bench to score 10 points and dish out five assists. Wingate placed four players in double figures, led by Samantha Dailey’s (Huntington, WV) 22. Julie Law (Lancaster, SC) came off the bench to score 15 points, while Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, NC) had 14 points and nine boards. #####
