Men's Basketball drops 79-71 decision at Wingate
WINGATE, NC – Wingate pulled away in the final six minutes of the opening half and defeated visiting Catawba 79-71 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 8-16 overall and 4-7 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 9-15 and 4-7.
Catawba would hold a couple of leads in the opening half, but a jumper by Titus Miller with 8:29 left gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 20-19. Leading 24-21, Wingate used a 10-2 run to take a 34-23 edge at the 1:57 mark and led 38-30 at the break.
An 11-3 run in the opening six minutes of the second half gave Wingate a 51-36 edge with 14:30 remaining. The Bulldogs would increase its lead to 59-41 with 12:52 left and held a double digit lead until the final minutes. Wingate doubled up Catawba at the free throw line, hitting on 21-of-27, while the Indians made just 10-of-19. Catawba held a 48-35 edge on the boards.
Keenan Dunn led Wingate with 21 points and had nine rebounds, while Miller had 20 points and nine boards. Ahmad Richardson also reached double figures with 13. Freshman Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) notched a career-high 18 points in a losing effort for Catawba. Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
