Seniors, Easter lift Women's Basketball over NewberrySALISBURY, NC – Freshman Ingrid Easter (Cana, VA) hit a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift Catawba to a 76-74 win over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 4-21 and 1-11. Seniors Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) closed out their home careers in style, combining for 45 of Catawba’s 76 points, but it was a pair of freshmen that accounted for the final three points to rally the Lady Indians. Locklear, who was saddled with her fourth foul in the opening minutes of the second half, returned in the final eight minutes and scored11 of 13 Tribe points to give Catawba a 73-72 lead with 1:08 left. Newberry’s Tanya Deese (Prosperity, SC) answered on a jumper with 48 seconds remaining to send the visitors back on top at 74-73. Catawba freshman Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) went to the line with 26 seconds to go and made the first of two free throws, but Locklear grabbed the rebound for Catawba. Foster would miss on a baseline jumper with three seconds to go and Easter grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Karisa Dinges (Mendota, IL) desperation shot just inside half court at the buzzer bounced off the rim. The game featured eight ties and nine lead changes. The teams went to the locker room knotted 35-35 at the half and Catawba built as much as a 13-point lead at 60-47 the final half with 10:32 left. Newberry whittled away at the lead and eventually tied the contest at 64-64 with 4:57 to go on a three-pointer by Laura Banda (Holcomb, KS). Dinges put Newberry up 66-64 on two free throws with 4:11 left. Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) and Deese traded baskets before Locklear tied the game on a jumper, then put Catawba on top 71-68 on a three-point play with 2:35 remaining. Banda and Deese would hit layups for Newberry to put the visitors back on top at 72-71 with 1:28 to go, setting up the final 1:08. Locklear scored a game-high 25 points in the win, while Stewart added 20, including a 6-for-8 performance from behind the arc. Banda led Newberry, scoring all 15 of her points after the break.
