Softball Pounds Out Two Wins Over Emmanuel
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Catawba took a pair of softball games from host Mount Olive on Tuesday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. The Catawba Indians moved to 8-0 with a pair of six-innings wins by the scores of 9-0 and 10-1. The Lions fall to 2-4.
Allie Baker hit a grand slam to put Catawba up 4-0 in the opener and Brooke Walser did the rest as she hurled the six-inning shutout. Walser improved to 4-0, allowing just one hit, a walk and striking out five.
Baker’s big blow came with one out in the third to snap a scoreless tie. Lexi Bryant doubled home a pair of runs in the fourth and Brittany Ireland connected on a two-run homer in the sixth.
Bryant picked up three hits in the opener with Kayla Pedersen going 2-for-4. Isabelle Petty had the line hit for Emmanuel as the leadoff batter of the game. Walser allowed a leadoff walk in the second then retired the final 15 batters of the game.
In game two, Gracie Gibson gave the Lady Indians an early lead with a bases-loaded walk in the first. Riley Tucker padded the lead with a three-run double in the second. Gibson gave Catawba its run-rule margin by swatting a three-run homer in the sixth.
Summer Howerton (2-0) got the win and Madison Hunter shut the door over the final three innings. Howerton allowed a run in the third, but got out of bases-loaded jam without any other damage. Hunter gave up just one hit and fanned four over three shutout innings.
Carlee Brawley, Bailey Benton and Jordan Dean all had two hits in game two for Catawba. Gibson collected five RBI. Petty had one of the four hits for Emmanuel.
Catawba travels to Queens on Tuesday to open conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
