Baseball Sweeps Rival Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday in Exciting Fashion
HICKORY, N.C. -- The tenth-ranked Catawba baseball team (3-0, 2-0 SAC) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2, 0-2 SAC) in both games of a Saturday doubleheader. Game one saw the Indians win 6-3 in eight innings and 5-4 in game two.
It was a chilly day for a double-header in Hickory on Saturday, but Catawba was able to get an extra innings win by the score of 6-3 in game 1. The Bears would take a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a solo homerun by catcher Nick Clarno. An RBI single by Jeremy Simpson in the third tied the game 1-1. Down 3-1, the Indians bounced back after a Cameron Morrison RBI and a Zach Miller Homerun to tie the game again at 3-3 in the 7th inning.
Catawba took the lead for the final time in the 8th when Simpson hit a 2-RBI triple to go ahead 5-3. Morrison drove in the 6th run on a sacrifice fly that scored Simpson. Sawyer Strickland got the win out of the bullpen by going 3 innings while giving up just 1 hit and 1 walk. Bryan Ketchie started for the Indians, going 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 runs.
Ketchie also struck out 4 Lenoir-Rhyne batters.
Other contributors for Catawba included Hunter Shepherd, who went 2-4 with 2 runs scored. Lee Poteat went 1-4 with two runs scored, and Bryce Butler went 1-3.
The Indians jumped on the Bears pitching early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning. Cameron Morrison, Henderson Lentz, and Joe Butts each drove in a run in the frame. Lenoir-Rhyne got on the board in the 3rd inning after a Dru Galassi solo homer to right field. Galassi finished the game 3-5 with 2-RBI and 3 runs scored.
Up 3-2 in the 7th, Hunter Shepherd hit a double down the left field line that scored two runs to get the Indians’ lead to 5-2. Two late solo homers by Nick Clarno and Galassi got the Bears within 1 run, but Robbie Cowie shut the door and finished off the Saturday sweep. This was Cowie’s first save of the year. Trent Montgomery got the win in relief for his first win of the season.
Greg Brown got the start on the bump for Catawba, going 4.1 innings giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, and 5 walks. Brown also struck out 2 batters on the game. Tanner Moyers got the loss for Lenoir-Rhyne. Moyers started and went 6 innings while giving up 3 runs and striking out 6.
Tomorrow the same two teams face off in Hickory for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 1 pm.
