Baseball Comes Alive Late to Split Sunday Doubleheader at LR
HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba’s bats were quiet most of the day on Sunday afternoon at Durham, but the Catawba Indians were able to come away with a split of the doubleheader against host Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears won the opener 4-0 before the Indians came back to post a 10-2 victory in game two. Catawba is now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, while the Bears are 3-3 and 1-3.
Andrew Patrick no-hit the Indians in game one. He walked three and fanned six, while also hitting a pair of batters. Drue Galassi’s two-run homer in the first would be all the support Patrick needed. Connor Smith added a homer in the fourth and Bryce Stober singled in a run in the sixth.
Catawba’s first baserunner came in the fifth when Cameron Morrison was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Joe Butts followed with a walk and after two were out, Patrick hit Cameron Mills to lead the bases before getting out of the jam. Morrison and Butts drew walks to open the seventh, but Patrick retired the final three batters to end the game.
The Indians were held hitless through the first three innings of game two, but broke through in the fourth with a lead off single by Lee Poteat. An error helped lead to a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Simpson and a 1-0 lead.
E.J. Ranel tied the game on a solo home run with two outs in the fifth and the Bears took the lead in the sixth on a two-out double by Mike McHugh.
Catawba would erupt in the last two innings. Bryce Butler and Poteat singled to open the eighth, while Hunter Shepherd and Simpson walk to tie the game. Morrison cleared the bases with a three-run double and the Indians were suddenly up 5-2.
Zach Miller added a RBI single in the eighth then the Indians added four more in the ninth. Simpson doubled home two with Butts adding a run-scoring single and Jake Rowden a sacrifice fly.
Maddux Holshouser got the start in game two and fanned eight in five and two-thirds innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and three walks. Sawyer Strickland pitched a scoreless inning with Ben Gilks (1-0) tossing the final two and a third to get the win. He did not allow a hit and fanned three.
Poteat picked up three hits and scored three runs in the win with Butler reaching safely twice. Simpson drove in four and Morrison three. Shepherd (0-1) took the loss in game one. He allowed three runs over five innings, giving up six hits and fanning three.
Next up for Catawba is a non-conference tilt at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
