Softball earns split in doubleheader with Augusta

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and visiting Augusta State split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba won the opener 3-2, while the Jaguars won the nightcap 6-4. The Lady Indians are now 3-6 on the year, while Augusta State is 3-1. Augusta broke a scoreless tie in the opener with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning. Catawba would scratch in only one inning, with all three runs coming in the sixth. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) led off the inning with a double and scored on a one-out single by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). Senior Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) drove home the tying run on a double and Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) plated the game-winner on a fielder’s choice. Augusta’s Leigh Schneider (Hemet, CA) was the only player to collect two hits in the opener. Catawba’s Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) evened her record at 2-2, scattering six hits for the complete game win. Erin Cown (Loganville, GA) allowed just five hits and one earned run in taking the loss for the Jaguars. A four-run second, aided by three Catawba errors, helped Augusta to an early lead in the second game. A two-run double by Schneider in the sixth upped the jaguar lead to 6-0. Catawba got a RBI-double from Myers and a two-run homer by Shannon Handy to help close the gap. Kristi Davis (Canton, GA) enjoyed a 3-for-4 effort in the nightcap, while Schneider had two hits and three RBI. Shannon Handy and Myers each had two hits for Catawba. Shelli Sermans (Lakeland, GA) improved to 2-0 for Augusta, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. #####
