Late Homers Give Softball Split With Eight-Ranked LMU

SALISBURY, N.C. -- In a battle of unbeaten teams, Catawba and Lincoln Memorial split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The eighth-ranked Railsplitters won the opener 10-8, while the Catawba Indians took game two 5-3. Catawba now stands at 11-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. LMU is 12-1 and 3-1.

LMU looked poised to sweep the two games, but sixth-inning home runs by Jordan Dean and Allie Baker sparked Catawba to the split. Catawba’s Whitley Arnott and LMU’s Emma Frost hooked up in a pitcher’ duel in game two with LMU leading 1-0 after five. In the sixth, Audrey Petrosky, the key bat for LMU in the opener, connected for a two-run homer off Arnott to give the visiting Railsplitters a 3-0 edge.

Kayla Peterson drew a walk to lead off the Catawba sixth and Carlee Brawley singled. After an out, Dean delivered a three-run homer to tie the game. Gracie Gibson was able to reach base after being hit by a pitch at the end of a 14-pitch at bat to set the stage for Baker. With two outs, Baker put Catawba on top with her home run.

Madison Hunter pitched the seventh inning for Catawba. She allowed a lead off hit then posted a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to end the game and pick up her fourth save. Arnott (2-0) grabbed the win. She allowed three runs off seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Game one was a high scoring affair with LMU snapping an 8-all tie in the seventh on a two-run double by Petrosky. Catawba had twice battled from behind. Brittany Ireland had a three-run homer in the third to give the Lady Indians a 6-5 edge and Riley Tucker had a solo shot to start the sixth to tie the game at 8-8.

Catawba had led 3-0 after two innings, but LMU took advantage of a pair of Lady Indian errors to scored five times in the third third. Four of those runs were unearned. McKenzie Henry hit a three-run homer in the fourth to give the Railsplitters an 8-6 lead.

Tucker and Ireland had two hits for Catawba in game one. Brawlee had two of the five Lady Indian hits in game two. Petrosky had four hits for LMU in the opener and the homer in game two. Ty-Kella Goines also had five hits over the two games.

Catawba is back in SAC action on Saturday, hosting Anderson for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
