Fairweather tosses Baseball to 5-2 win over LMU

SALISBURY, NC – Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed seven and two-thirds strong innings with nine strikeouts, scattering five hits, pitching the Catawba Indians to a 5-2 win over visiting Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba jumps to 8-7 on the year, while the LMU falls to 2-9.The Indians jumped on the board in the first when Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) doubled in Mark Smith (Browns Summit, NC), who led off with a double earlier in the inning. The Tribe added runs in the fifth and sixth. Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) doubled down the right field line, bringing in Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC), who also doubled to lead off the fifth. Mark Smith scored in the sixth when Scott Searles (Boston, MA) slapped a two-bagger down the right-field line. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) gave Catawba two more insurance runs as he crushed a two-run shot to center field for the Indians’ final runs of the afternoon. The Railsplitters only scoring came in the top of the eighth, capitalizing on an Indian throwing error as Mickey Apple (Virginia Beach, VA) and Taylor Gandy (Yorktown, VA) would have RBI singles in the frame. Johnson Whitehead (Lexington, KY) had a 2-for-4 performance for LMU. For the Tribe, Southard would have a 3-for-5 day with two doubles. Giles also picked up a double in his 2-for-3 outing. Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) pitched a perfect ninth, with three strikeouts, picking up his first save of the season. #####
