Davis selected as SAC Baseball Position Player of the WeekROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba designated hitter Jimbo Davis and Carson-Newman's Chad Gillis have earned South Atlantic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, the league announced Monday afternoon.Davis, a 5-11 Salisbury native, hit .500 for the week, going 7-for-14 and collecting nine RBI to increase his season total to 22. The 190-pound sophomore had a grand slam in an 8-0 win over Lincoln Memorial University and two more homers over the week. His seventh-inning single tied the Wednesday game with Lenoir-Rhyne, one that the Indians would go on to win 6-5. Behind Davis, Catawba turned in a 3-1 record for the week. A 6-3 junior from Erwin, Tenn., Gillis turned in an outstanding performance on the mound as he struck out 10 Delta State batters, walking none, as the Eagles took a 4-2 win in game two of a doubleheader against the 14th-ranked Statesmen. The right-handed transfer from Walters State Community College pitched all seven innings and limited the high-powered Delta State offense to only four hits. He struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning as the Eagles claimed a 4-2 win. Gillis is now 3-0, the best record of all the Eagles' starters, with a 3.50 ERA. The SAC player and pitcher of the week are determined by votes of the league's eight sports information directors. #####
