Explosive seventh inning sends Baseball past Belmont Abbey 13-7SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College used an eight run, ten-hit attack in the seventh inning en route to a 13-7 victory over the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. With the win, the Indians improve to 9-7, the Crusaders drop to 4-14. Belmont Abbey struck in the first as Ian Gibson (Belmont, NC) singled in Derek Brown (Mastic Beach, NY) for an early 1-0 lead. Catawba responded in the bottom half of the first when Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) lined a two-run shot, just inside the left field foul-pole, his third of the season. Gibson, who went 2-for-3 on the day, gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead in the third with a two-run single before adding a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Catawba would capitalize on a couple of Belmont Abbey errors, scoring three in the fifth for a 5-4 advantage after five innings of play. Chris Brake (Clemmons, NC) went 3-for-4, for the Crusaders, picking up a two-run single in the seventh, while Gibson picked up his fifth RBI of the contest on a fielder’s choice sending Belmont Abbey to a brief 7-5 lead. The Tribe would open up the flood gates in the seventh and take the lead for good as the entire lineup picked up at-least one hit in the inning, with all but one Indian runner in the lineup scoring. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) had the big blow with a bases-clearing double. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) picked up two singles in the inning, along with two RBI. Southard went 3-for-5 on the afternoon, Boyles was 3-for-4 with Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA), Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) also picking up multi-hit games for the Indians. Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) pitched two innings of relief, picking up the win, his second of the season. #####
