Men's Basketball drops another close decision at PC
CLINTON, SC – Presbyterian pulled away in the final five minutes and recorded a 60-51 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Templeton Center. The Blue Hose improve to 16-10 overall and 7-6 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 9-17 and 4-9.
For Presbyterian, Johann Collins (Raleigh, NC) and Melvin Smith (Roanoke, VA) each had 10 points to lead the way. The teams were tied at 11-11 in the low scoring contest with 8:27 to go in the opening half, but the Blue Hose closed the stanza on a 14-5 run to take a 25-16 edge to the break.
Catawba would start strong in the final half and with a 13-4 run tied the game at 29-29 on a three-point play by Jolly Manning (Rocky Mount, NC) with 15:52 remaining. The teams would battle back and forth until Presbyterian closed the game on a 17-8 run. The Blue Hose hit on 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
The Indians hit on just 28.6% in the opening half and just 36.5% for the game, while Presbyterian canned 51% of its attempts. The Blue Hose also held a 37-25 edge on the boards. Helgi Magnusson led the Catawba scoring with 14 points and added five rebounds. Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) had nine points and seven boards.
