Michell's Seven Goals Powers Men's Lacrosse Over Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. – Matt Mitchell scored seven goals to lead Catawba to a 16-8 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium. The win lifts the Catawba Indians to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 3-8 and 1-7.
After Catawba grabbed a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter, Mars Hill struck for two goals to close the gap to 3-2 late in the period. Mitchell scored his first goal to close the first then added four straight to start the second to push the Indians ahead 8-2 at the 7:30 mark of the quarter.
The Indians led 9-4 at the half and put the game away with a four-goal spurt that was capped by Mitchell’s final tally to go up 14-6 with 3:04 to go in the third quarter. Brandon Beland scored twice for the Lions to get Mars Hill within 14-8, but Catawba added two insurance goals in the final minutes.
Mitchell added two assists and three ground balls to his seven goals. Yasir Stroud picked up three goals, while Christian Norrie had two goals and an assist. Tucker Fanzo put home a goal and provided three assists.
Catawba held a 63-43 edge in shots. James Crighton collected 17 saves in goal for Catawba. Shawn Casebolt won a dozen face-offs and picked up nine ground balls. Payton Leonard caused three turnovers with five ground balls.
Beland paced Mars Hill with four goals. Trevor Kennedy added three goals. Steven Smith recorded 21 saves.
Catawba hosts Coker on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
