Men's Lacrosse Falls to Coker in Overtime
SALISBURY, N.C. – Coker scored with 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to take a 13-12 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The Cobras improve to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians go to 5-6 and 4-4.
Catawba had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to start the contest. The Indians tied the game at 9-all on a tally by Jared Hadley with 4:27 left in the third quarter. The teams traded goals before the Cobras eased out to a 12-10 lead with 7:07 left.
Matt Mitchell scored for Catawba at the 3:52 and 1:55 marks of the final quarter to knot the game at 12-12. Coker finally produced the winner from Ethan Irizarry at the end of overtime.
Tucker Fanzo finished with four goals and an assist. He had two goals in the opening quarter to get Catawba within 5-3 after the first period. Mitchell and Hadley both had two goals. Payton Leonard caused four turnovers and had six ground balls while also scoring a goal. James Crighton collected 18 saves.
Coker got two goals from Irizarry, Joe Venazio, Cal Gibson and Andrew Dappen. Venazio handed out a pair of assists. Jason McNeany won 17-of-23 face-offs and scored a goal. Chris Hagy recorded 17 saves.
Catawba returns to action on April 17, closing out the regular season at 4 p.m. versus Queens.
