Softball drops doubleheader at Coker, Handy sisters collect three hits apeice

HARTSVILLE, SC -- Coker College swept a double-header against visiting Catawba in softball action on Monday afternoon at Saleeby-Stokes Field. The Cobras won by the scores of 5-1 and 7-0 to improve to 8-0 on the year. Catawba drops to 5-7. Coker dodged a bullet in the first inning of the opener after the first three batters reached base. Cleanup hitter Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) flied out to center field and it appeared that the Lady Indians had taken a 1-0 lead. However, Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) left third too early and was called out. Coker escaped the inning two batters later on a strike out. The Cobras plated two runs in the second inning with four consecutive hits, and added one more in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Catawba plated its only run of the game in the sixth inning, when Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) scored on a fielder’s choice of the bat of Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL). Freshman Somer Bigham gave up five hits in seven innings of work, allowing one earned run while striking out three. Sophomore Brandi Holder and senior Summer Joyner each went 2-3 with a run scored for Coker. Senior Kaylene Fountain and sophomore Christan Morabito both picked up one hit, one run scored and one RBI. Both Handy sisters had two hits for Catawba, while Rhoades had the other. Coker struck early in game two with five runs in the first three innings. The Cobras added one run each in the fifth and sixth innings and rode a solid pitching performance from Fountain and sophomore Amanda Shelton to earn the victory. Fountain struck out five and allowed two hits in four innings before handing the ball to Shelton, who went three innings, struck out four batters and allowed only one hit. Joyner picked up two more hits, two RBI and two runs scored to lead CC and Fountain drove in three runs on one hit and a sacrifice fly. Morabito and senior Sheritha McKenzie both scored twice. The Handy sisters and freshman Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) collected a hit apiece for Catawba. #####
