Smith brothers power Baseball to 19-5 rout of St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, NC Catawba College pounded out 22 hits en route to a 19-5 win over host St. Andrews in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Clark Field. The Indians improve to 12-8 with the win, while the Knights fall to 8-6. The Tribe erupted for nine runs in the opening inning, including hitting three home runs. Two solo shots came off the bat of leadoff man Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC), which tied a school record. The other long ball was a grand slam by Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA). Catawba would put up at least one run in seven of the nine innings of play. Mark Smith finished the day going 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. His brother, Matt, was 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) would lead the hit parade with five hits in six at bats, collecting four RBI. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) also homered for the Tribe. Jeff Abdelnour (Cohoes, NY) earned the win on the mound. He tossed six innings, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs. He recorded six strikeouts in picking up his first decision of the year. William Clark (Laurinburg, NC) enjoyed a 4-for-5 day for the hosts, while Everett Kelly (Wilmington, NC) had a pair of RBI. Each homered along with Taylor Kennedy (Siler City, NC). #####
