Magnusson, Wooldridge earn SAC Men's Basketball post-season honors
HICKORY, NC – Catawba sophomore Helgi Magnusson earned second team all-conference honors and Chris Wooldridge was named to the all-freshman team as the 2003-2004 South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball All-Conference teams and award recipients were announced during the tournament basketball awards banquet Friday night in Hickory, N.C. The function tips off the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Basketball Tournament, which begins play Friday at Lenoir-Rhyne College and the Catawba Valley Community College Multipurpose Facility.
Magnusson leads the Indians this season in both scoring and rebounding. The sophomore from Reykjavik, Iceland, has averaged 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season. He was also second on the team with 29 steals and third with 60 assists. Magnusson hit on a team-leading 54 three-point baskets and was 130-of-175 at the line, hitting on 74.3%.
Wooldridge, of Newport News, Virginia, averaged 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in his initial campaign at Catawba. He led the team in field goal shooting, connecting on 57.4% (105-of-183). He was second on the team with 28 blocked shots.
In the league, Magnusson finished the regular season ranked seventh in scoring and third in rebounding. He ranked 12th in free throw shooting and tenth in three-point accuracy, while ranking seventh in three-pointers made per game. Wooldridge was 26th in scoring and 12th in rebounding. He was third in the league in field goal shooting and sixth in blocks.
In major awards, Tusculum first-year coach Duggar Baucom, who guided the Pioneers to a share of their first-ever SAC basketball title, was named Men’s Coach of the Year. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Roman Davis was the Men’s Player of the Year and Men’s Freshman of the Year is Chris Conn of Mars Hill. The SAC Scholar Athlete Award for the men went to Jerome Ramsey of Mars Hill.
