Locklear named SAC Women's Basketball Player of Year, three others honored

HICKORY, NC – Four members of the Catawba College women’s basketball team, headed by league Player of the Year Danyel Locklear, were honored as the 2003-2004 South Atlantic Conference men’s and women’s basketball All-Conference teams and award recipients were announced during the tournament basketball awards banquet Friday night in Hickory, NC. The function tips off the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Basketball Tournament, which begins play Friday at Lenoir-Rhyne College and the Catawba Valley Community College Multipurpose Facility.Locklear, of Pembroke, NC, finished second in the league in scoring at 20 points per game, second in rebounding (10.9) and second in field goal percentage (57.2%). Her 33 points against Mars Hill was a conference season high. She also led the team in steals (61) and blocks (32) and was third in assists with 63. Locklear was named Player of the Week four times. Locklear was also a first team All-SAC performer, while junior Ashley Cox was named to the second team. The Richmond, VA, native led the league in assists at 5.3 a game and in free throw percentage at 85.0% (96-of-113). She averaged 12.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. Ingrid Easter and Tamekia Foster were named to the SAC All-Freshman team. Easter, of Cana, VA, started 21 of 26 games this season and 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. She had 41 assists and 21 steals, while hitting on 73.6% of her free throw attempts. Easter twice hit for double figures with her high of 15 coming at Tusculum. Foster, of Chesapeake, VA, made 11 starts in 25 games, averaging 5.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. She recorded 21 steals and connected on 72.3% at the line. Foster reached double figures four times with a high of 15 in a win over Columbus State. Other major SAC awards went to Karen Barefoot, of Lenoir-Rhyne and Johnny Jacumin, of Wingate, who were named co-Coach of the Year for women’s basketball. Both coaches guided their teams to a share of the league championship this year.
