Ettinger k's 12 as Softball tops West Liberty in nine innings

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College earned a 3-2 win over visiting West Liberty State in softball action at the Catawba Invitational softball tournament on Friday night at Salisbury Community Park. The Lady Indians took the game in nine innings to improve to 6-8 on the season. West Liberty falls to 2-1. The game was scoreless for seven innings and was decided in extra innings using the international tiebreaker rule. Catawba, batting as the visitors, scored in its eighth as Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) delivered a RBI double. The Hilltoppers answered back in their eighth as Carla Krieg (Grand Valley, OH) drove home a run on a fielder’s choice. In the ninth, a fielder’s choice grounder by Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) put Catawba back on top and a RBI single by Ashlee Rhodes (China Grove, NC) put the Lady Indians up 3-1. West Liberty got one run back in the ninth on a bunt by Stacey Spilker (Carrollton, OH), but could not push across the tying run. Myers and Jeana Craver (Lexington, NC) each had two hits for Catawba, while Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) earned the win on the mound, tossing nine innings and allowing only two unearned runs on four hits. She walked one and struck out a dozen. In other games, Limestone defeated Shepherd 9-4, while North Florida topped Pfeiffer 9-0. Coker beat Wheeling Jesuit 3-0, then fell to Georgia College and State University 8-0. Pool play will continue on Saturday with a single-elimination tournament slated for Sunday. #####
