John Fitz begins his fourth season as a coach with the Catawba football program in 2009. He came to Catawba from New Hanover High School, where he spent six years. His duties include serving as assistant head coach, coordinating the special teams and directing strength and conditioning.

In 2007, the Catawba defence under Fitz ranked 34th in NCAA II in total defense and was 24th in turnover margin.  In 2006 the Indians ranked No. 12 in the nation, allowing 248.5 yards per game. The Tribe pass defense led the South Atlantic Conference by surrendering only 121 yards per contest.

At New Hanover, Fitz served as head coach for the last four years. Prior to becoming head coach, he spent two seasons as defensive coordinator and strength coach. New Hanover qualified for the state playoffs each season with Fitz.

Fitz spent 12 years as defensive coordinator and strength coordinator at J.F.Webb High School before moving to New Hanover. He began his coaching career as an assistant at High Point Central High School.

Fitz resides in Granite Quarry with his wife,Anne. They have a son, Jackson (8).
