- A leading member of three Carolinas Conference championship football teams- 1945 (10-1-0), 1946 (10-2-0), 1947 (11-1-0) and a member of Catawba's two Tangerine Bowl Championship teams of 1946 & 1947
- Football All-Conference, All-State, Little All-American as a center, Most Valuable Player on Catawba team, 1948
- Head football coach and athletic director at Glen Alpine, N.C. High School for 25 years (1948-73) and at Freedom High School, Morganton, N.C. for nine years (1973-82). Career coaching record is 297-91-10. Coached unbeaten teams in 1963, 1964, 1965. Also coached varsity basketball 24 years, baseball 15, and track 10.
- On retirement from coaching in 1982, was winningest active high school football coach in North Carolina and sixith in the nation. Named "Coach of the Year" eight times and was assistant coach on 1965 Shrine Bowl Team. Coached in four North South All-Star games, one East West All-Star game and one Lion Bowl game. His teams won six of the seven games.
