Larry W. Leckonby enters his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at Catawba College. During his tenure at Catawba, he has overseen several facilities projects, expanded the number of athletic teams and the number of student-athletes, and brought seven new head coaches to Salisbury. Catawba teams have also earned ten South Atlantic Conference Championships since 2014. Baseball has led the way with four regular season titles and two Conference Tournament Championships. Softball won Conference Tournament Championships in 2015 and 2016, Football won the 2015 Conference Championship and Men’s Basketball won it in 2019.  Baseball has also participated in the NCAA National Championships in both 2015 and 2019, and was the national runner-up in 2015.

During his first year at Catawba, Leckonby oversaw the first major renovation to Goodman Gym since it opened in 1970. In the renovation, the entire floor of the gymnasium was covered with maple wood to replace the original tartan surface. New contoured bleachers were installed that included seatbacks for the lower half of each side. The final touches include new scoreboards that feature player stat panels, new scoring tables with two being LED, new bench chairs and new baskets and volleyball netting systems. Most recently, locker rooms for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball were renovated.

In addition, Catawba Athletics has added a three-court Beach Volleyball Complex, installed lights at the Softball Complex and added an Athletic Hall of Fame Corridor and Interactive Hall of Fame Display in the Abernethy Field House.

Leckonby has overseen the addition of seven new programs at Catawba since 2014. Developmental Women’s Soccer was added in 2016, Developmental Men’s Basketball in 2017, Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field in 2017 and Beach Volleyball in 2019. Overall the number of student-athletes has grown by 35% during this time with well over 500 student-athletes currently enrolled at Catawba.

Leckonby has an extensive background in college athletics. He came to Catawba from The Citadel, where he had served as the Director of Athletics from 2008 through 2014.

His prior experience includes service in senior athletics administration roles at the University of Maryland, the University of Houston, Boston College, Old Dominion University and Boston University.

Prior to joining The Citadel, Leckonby served as Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics and CFO at the University of Maryland, College Park, from September 2002 through July 2008.  There, he reported to the Director of Athletics Debbie Yow and oversaw the Athletic Department’s annual $54 million operating budget.  He also supervised capital projects, including final planning for a $50.8 million expansion of the football stadium, expansions to the Gossett Football Team House, six new grass and field turf practice fields, renovation of the track, and construction of the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

His tenure at the University of Houston began in January of 1998 with his service as Senior Associate Director of Athletics and CFO. He reported to two different Directors of Athletics during his four years there and had responsibility for the daily administration of the Athletic Department. He briefly served as Interim Director of Athletics at the University of Houston between September 2001 and February 2002.

Other positions he has held include Associate Director of Athletics for Business Affairs at Boston College from July 1993 to January 1998, Assistant Director of Athletics/Finance and Operations at Old Dominion University between September 1988 and July 1993, and Athletic Ticket Manager and Assistant Athletic Business Manager at Boston University between May 1982 and August of 1988.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Duke University where he was a four year member of the lacrosse team, and his Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Massachusetts. He has been an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/College Athletic Business Management Association (NACDA/CABMA) since 1985.

Leckonby’s wife, the former Cris Snarsky, is a teacher at East Rowan High School in Granite Quarry. The couple has three children; daughter Hunter, a graduate student at LaSalle University; son William, a student at Guilford College; and daughter Katie, a student at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
