Interim Head Coach
Alma Mater: Campbell '04
Office Phone: (704) 637-4236
John Kale became the Catawba College Assistant Golf Coach during the 2018-19 season. Following Coach Sam Gealy’s retirement after the 2021 season, Kale took over as interim head coach for both the men’s and women’s programs.
Kale came to Catawba in 2018, joining the faculty as an adjunct professor of popular music and worship arts, Director of Campus Worship Teams and guitar instructor. Shortly after coming to Catawba, he was extended an offer to John to join the golf staff - serving first as a volunteer assistant, then transitioning to the Head Assistant.
Kale spent the majority his professional life balancing careers in music and athletics. In addition to fifteen years as a professional musician and worship leader, he has coached several sports across the high school and middle school levels - including varsity and middle school golf, varsity basketball, varsity soccer and varsity softball. Kale also served as a high school and middle school athletic director. During this time, he had opportunities to invest further in golf by serving as PGA Junior League Coach, First Tee Instructor, Rules Official, Tournament Director and Mini-Tour Caddy.
Since joining the staff at Catawba, Kale has also served as the Head Golf Professional and Primary Instructor of Golf at The Revival at The Crescent in Salisbury. “Golf has always been a passion of mine,” said Kale. “The game has given me so much over the years that I always look to pay it forward. Working with juniors and beginners serves as a reminder that at its core, golf is a game and must always be fun. Working with college players and seasoned golfers provides balance to my instructional approach, and forces me to remain a student of the game myself.”
Kale grew up in Salisbury; attending and graduating from North Hills Christian School, less than a mile from the Catawba campus. He graduated from Campbell University in 2004 and will complete a leadership based masters degree from Liberty University in the fall of 2021. A lifelong golfer, Kale completed his competitive career after college and shifted his focus to helping grow the game of golf; helping others find the same passion he has for the game. In coming to Catawba, life has come full circle to bring Kale home. His return to Salisbury has reignited his passion for this community, while also influencing his coaching.
“Catawba is a special place. Much of my life, I observed this as an outsider. Now that I am part of the Catawba community, it is evident that Catawba is and always will be a family. The small school environment, community interaction and alumni involvement provides a connection between students today and generations of Catawba Indians that have gone before. As a coach, I try to instill this centrality of community to my teams - golf is in any ways an individual sport, but we are always giving our best - on the course, in the classroom and in life - for Our Tribe! This truth is why I am excited to continue building on the legacy Coach Gealy built here. I look forward to seeing what happens here in the future. I truly believe our best days as a golf program and school community are ahead of us - which is why I’m excited to call Catawba Home!” - Coach Kale
